Why we developed this program

People with specific responsibilities for WHS need to have a level of understanding of their responsibilities and the mechanisms for delivering WHS programs.

This program is suitable for newly promoted OHS staff and is also a pathway for entry into the Diploma of Work Health & Safety (BSB51315).

Who should attend:

The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41415) is suitable for anyone who has the role of a Health and Safety Representative (HSR), Health and Safety Committee Member or an OHS Assistant or Officer who works under the supervision of an OHS Coordinator or OHS Manager.  Is also ideal for existing workers who have a variety of WHS responsibilities and who may require additional WHS knowledge and skills.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

Enrolment Requirements

  • 18 years of age
  • Due to the practical nature of this course, it is highly recommend that participants are employed or otherwise engaged*
* Assessment assistance may be provided if this requirement cannot be met

Preferred pathways for participants considering this qualification include:

  • BSB30715 Certificate III in WHS or other relevant Certificate III qualifications;
  • Vocational experience in work health and safety roles, without a formal qualification

Pathways to completion of this qualification include:

  • Course attendance and assessment
  • RPL / Credit Transfer for partial or full qualification
  • A combination of the above

Units completed in this program may be credited towards other qualifications through a national recognition process.
After achieving this qualification participants may undertake BSB51315 Diploma of Work Health and Safety.

Workshop Delivery Schedule

1 day per fortnight over 15 weeks

Assessment

For the successful completion of this qualification, participants must complete a series of workshop and workplace-based assessment tasks. Assessment tasks must be submitted within twelve months from the last unit delivery date for the Diploma. For students undertaking the Entry Requirements course, assessment tasks must be submitted within six months from the last unit delivery date. Participants should allow approximately 6-8 hours per week to complete the self-directed learning and assessment tasks.

The assessment tasks for the units in this qualification require access to specific WHS documentation and equipment.  The assessment activities will require the application of skills and knowledge:

  • Through conducting and implementing hazard identification, monitoring and control activities in a real workplace environment
  • Through development and implementation of specific plans and tools
  • In consultation and communication

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available upon enrolment.

Eligibility for a Government Subsidised Place under the Skill First Program 2017
 

 To be eligible for a Government subsidised place, applicants must be:

  • An Australian citizen or holder of a permanent visa; or a New Zealand citizen; or an asylum seeker*;
  • A referred retrenched employee; or a referred Automotive Supply Chain employee**; AND
  • Aged 18-19 (i.e. under 20) years of age on 1 January in the year of course commencement; OR
  • Aged 20 years or over on 1 January in the year the course commences, and you are enrolling in a qualification that is at a higher level than your highest qualification held (‘upskilling’)**; AND
  • Have not commenced or are not scheduled to commence later in the year more than two Victorian government subsidised courses this year***; AND
  • Have not already commenced two government subsidised courses at the same level as the course you are seeking to enrol in now ***

*Asylum Seekers may be exempt from the citizenship criteria listed above; they must present a Referral Letter from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre or the Australian Red Cross;

** Individuals referred to training under the Retrenched Employees Program must meet all the eligibility criteria listed above, except the ‘upskilling’ requirement; they must present a Training Referral Letter issued by a Regional Manager, Industry Engagement, Department of Education and Training, not older than 12 months;

** Individuals referred to training under the Automotive Supply Chain Training Initiative must meet all the eligibility criteria listed above, except the ‘upskilling’ requirement; they must present am Automotive Supply Chain Initiative Referral Letter by a Regional Manager, Industry Engagement, Department of Education and Training, not older than 12 months;

*** 1. An individual is eligible to undertake a maximum of two Government subsidised courses at any one time in the calendar year

2. An individual is eligible to commence a maximum of two government subsidised courses at the same level within the Australian Qualifications Framework in their lifetime (e.g. only two courses at Certificate IV-level in their life)

Pre-Training Review

Part of the enrolment process, Victorian Chamber must conduct a Pre-Training Review of current competencies including language, literacy and numeracy skills. The Pre-Training Review must:

a) identify any competencies previously acquired (Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) or Credit Transfer);
b) ascertain the most appropriate qualification for each student to enrol in, including consideration of the likely job outcomes from the development of new competencies and skills; and
c) ascertain that the proposed learning strategies and materials are appropriate for each participant

Participants are required to download and complete the Pre-training review and evaluation and submit it together with the Registration Form and any other necessary documents. Feedback will be provided within two weeks from your course Registration being approved.
