Victorian Chamber welcomes new trams and trains to be built by Bombardier in Dandenong

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomes the announcement of $218.1 million to fund 10 more high-capacity E-class trams to be built by Melbourne Chamber of Commerce member Bombardier in Dandenong.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Acting Chief Executive Bryce Prosser said the new trams were part of significant transport initiatives in the 2017-18 Victorian Budget, including a $1.45 billion Regional Rail Revival package that will create 2,000 jobs across the state and $10 million allocated to develop a new airport rail plan.

“Significant investments in our transport network and infrastructure will benefit all Victorians, with improved connectivity, increased productivity and more reliable public transport available around the state,” he said.

The State Government also committed $311.1 million to deliver 39 new VLocity carriages, to increase rail services for regional Victorians.

“We are also pleased that this investment in Victoria’s public transport is also an investment in Victorian jobs, as the new E-class trams and the 39 VLocity carriages will be built by Bombardier in Dandenong.”

Mr Prosser said congestion is a major issue for a growing city like Melbourne, so continuing to invest in public transport to maintain a high level of service and cater for increased number of passengers is vital for our state’s future.

“Transport has received significant investment in this budget and by improving connectivity across the state and reducing travel times, we expect to see increased productivity for many Victorian businesses. This will boost the confidence of all Victorian businesses and promote jobs growth,” Mr Prosser said.
