This week we released our latest Survey of Business Trends and Prospects which showed 35 per cent of our surveyed members are experiencing difficulty in hiring skilled workers.

This is not a new issue facing Victorian businesses, but it does reveal how prevalent skills gaps are, with a third training their existing workers and a quarter actively seeking to hire skilled employees from competitors.

Payment surcharging – rules changing from 1 Sept

Do you currently impose a surcharge on customers who pay by card?  If you are a small business, you need to be aware that new rules will soon limit how much you can charge.

Recent changes to the Consumer Credit Act have imposed a ban on businesses from charging payment surcharges that are excessive.  This ban currently applies to large businesses, and will be extended to smaller businesses from 1 September 2017.

The Victorian Government recently announced a $200 million Future Industries Fund

The Victorian Government recently announced a $200 million Future Industries Fund to support high growth industry sectors that are critical to securing Victoria’s future as a competitive, innovative and outward looking economy. The Government has identified six industry sectors that have potential for extraordinary economic growth and the capacity to create high-skill, high wage jobs. These include:

• Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals

• New Energy Technologies

• Food and Fibre

High Risk Work Licence Changes

High risk work licences are required for employees who operate certain high risk equipment or plant and are issued by WorkSafe Victoria under the new Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations, 2017 (OHS Regulations).  A high risk work licence is valid for up to 5 years is valid in every Australian State and Territory enabling licenced operators to work with high risk equipment under consistent standards anywhere in Australia.

Export Market Development Grant - Second tranche payout factor for the 2015-16 grant year

On Monday 26 June 2017 Austrade announced that businesses entitled to a grant of up to $40,000 (the first tranche payment) will receive the full value of the claim as it is approved.

Austrade has also determined that the final payment outcomes for businesses entitled to a grant of more than $40,000 will be reimbursed in the vicinity of 45 to 55 per cent of the remaining grant amount payable.

Fair Work Commission refuses to issue stop-bullying orders despite recognising bullying had occurred

The Fair Work Commission has refused to issue stop-bullying orders despite finding bullying had occurred due to an employer’s proactive measures to minimise the future risk of the behaviour continuing. Two employees applied for orders against their manager and employer, a bus charter and coach hire business.
