3.5% minimum wage increase
This represents a $24.30-a-week pay rise, with the national minimum wage increasing to $719.20 a week.
This is significantly higher than the 1.9% wage increase sought by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and represents the ninth year in a row in which minimum wages have been increased by more than inflation.
However, the result is significantly lower than that sought by the Australian Council of Trade Unions which called for an increase of 7.2% or $50 per week.
The Australian Chamber’s response to the increase highlighted that Australia’s National Minimum Wage is now close to, if not, the highest in the world and that the increase puts jobs in small business at risk.
