New transport projects announced to reduce congestion
The Victorian Chamber has been a long-term advocate for investment in Melbourne’s infrastructure, and these projects will be vital to unlocking economic growth and job opportunities across Melbourne.
The Mordialloc Freeway project:
On 9 April the State Government announced a commitment of a further $75 million to upgrade the Mordialloc Bypass, connecting the Mornington Peninsula Freeway with the Dingley Bypass. The upgrade will create a continuous freeway from Frankston to Clayton.
Victoria’s rapid population growth means congestion is a major issue for commuters, residents and businesses throughout our state. Projects such as this and investment in regional roads are vital for Victoria’s future economic and social prosperity.
The Mordialloc Freeway project intends to reduce travel times, improve productivity and promote growth and jobs in the region, particularly around the Monash and Dandenong employment precincts.
Construction of the Mordialloc Freeway is planned to commence next year and be completed by the end of 2021.
New south-east tram route:
New plans for a south-east tram route connecting Caulfield and Rowville were announced this week.
Stage one proposes to link Caulfield Station to Monash University’s Clayton campus via Chadstone Shopping Centre then to Rowville via Waverley Park.
Better public transport connections are vital to unlocking the economic growth and job opportunities in Melbourne’s south-east, in particular, the thriving education and employment hub around Monash University’s Clayton campus.
Clayton is home to many key contributors to Victoria’s high growth sectors including, Monash University, CSIRO, the Australian Synchrotron, the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication, the Monash Medical Centre and the coming Victorian Heart Hospital.
There is a strong need for enhanced connectivity to integrate Melbourne’s south-east with the city’s core transport network.
The Victorian Government will provide $3 million in the Victorian Budget 2018/19 for design and planning works to examine alignments, park and ride options, stop locations, cost and travel time benefits.
Extra parking at train stations:
Both major parties have committed to providing extra parking at some of Melbourne’s busiest railway stations.
Premier Daniel Andrews announced Belgrave, Sandown Park, Epping and Craigieburn stations will have 2,000 new and upgraded car parking spaces under a $60 million plan.
Opposition leader Matthew Guy made a commitment to provide 150 new spaces along the Hurstbridge line at Greensborough, Montmorency and Eltham stations at an estimated cost of $4 million.
Expanding car parking facilities both within metropolitan Melbourne and at outer urban railway stations is an important investment to encourage greater public transport use, in turn, reducing congestion on our city’s road network.
