3% minimum wage increase

On Thursday 30 May, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) announced an increase of 3% to the National Minimum Wage, payable from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2019.

This represents a $21.60-a-week pay rise, with the weekly national minimum wage increasing to $740.80.

This is significantly higher than the 1.8% wage increase sought by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and represents the tenth year in a row in which minimum wages have been increased by more than inflation.

The Australian Chamber’s response to the increase highlighted that Australia already has one of the highest minimum wages in the world, and their concern the increase will ‘put jobs in danger and risk the viability of some small businesses’.
